Paper 2
MW Practical Paper 2 — Red Wines Since 2005
Paper 2 is the red wine paper of the Master of Wine practical wine exam. This page compiles all the red MW wines used in Paper 2 since 2005. It also highlights the varieties and countries that appear most often in this part of the exam to help focus revision on the wines that matter most.
If you are preparing for the MW practical wine exam, the aim is not just to recognise a red wine variety in isolation. You also need to be able to compare different regions, ripeness levels, structures, and winemaking styles within the varieties and countries that recur most often.

1. Variety summary
Since 2005, there have been 240 Paper 2 exam wines. Across those wines, more than 31 varieties and blends have been examined.
Four varieties make up half of the wines examined in Paper 2. These are Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot. Ten varieties make up 80% of the wines examined. These are the top four plus Tempranillo, Garnacha, Malbec, Nebbiolo, Sangiovese, and Gamay.
The top three varieties — Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah — are all represented at a very similar level, with 35, 34, and 33 appearances respectively. Merlot, the fourth most examined category, has 18 appearances. This is quite different from Paper 1, where Chardonnay is the clearly dominant single variety.
What does this tell us for the MW practical wine exam? First, you do not need to know every obscure red grape variety equally well in order to do well. Second, you do need to know the key varieties extremely well. The top 11 varieties often feature two or more wines in a single paper. That means you are not only likely to need to identify the variety, but also to compare and contrast different styles and regions that produce it.
If you are deciding where to focus your revision of Paper 2 MW wines, start with the big three: Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. There is a strong chance that at least one of them will appear in any given Paper 2 exam.

3. Paper 2 country summary
Since 2005, Paper 2 MW wines have come from 16 different countries. France has appeared in 100% of Paper 2 exams. Of the 240 Paper 2 wines, 74 have come from France — more than 30% of the wines examined. On average, there are 3.7 French wines in each Paper 2 exam.
Italy has appeared in 85% of Paper 2 exams since 2005, with an average of 2.2 Italian wines whenever it appears. Red wines from the USA and Australia have both appeared in 70% of Paper 2 exams since 2005, with averages of 1.8 wines for the USA and 1.6 wines for Australia.
Taken together, the red wines of France, Italy, the USA, and Australia make up just over two thirds of the wines examined in Paper 2 since 2005.
What does this tell us for the MW practical wine exam? First, you need to know the red wines of France intimately. Second, you should make sure you know the red wines of Italy better than any other country apart from France. Those two countries, more than any others, dominate the red wine side of the MW exam.
